CP BIOLOGY - Mr. Nolan 2009-2010

Welcome to Teacher Notes. I hope this helps you, but keep in mind that instructions I provide in class may be more accurate than what I have posted here.

Your homework is to be sure you understand our concepts every day. If you don't, learning the concepts is your homework. You are responsible for your success and future.

LATES: Keep in mind that if you don't hand in homework on time, you are responsible for getting it to me by the start of the next class meeting for a 20% deduction. After that it goes to zero. I won't know who did not submit the homework on time, so I can't remind you.

COPYING: Never copy anything from anybody for any assignment. I follow the student handbook policies for cheating and plagiarism. I value honesty and learning by thinking and putting in effort.

Regards,

-JN-

UNIT 2 - SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTATION + Properties of Living Things

Class & Homework Assignment: CONDUCT A CAUSE AND EFFECT SCIENTIFIC STUDY

Due: PD 2 & 4 due Friday Sept 25; PD 3&7 due Tuesday 9/29.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD STEPS SUMMARY

1.      observation

2.      question

3.      hypothesis

4.      controlled experiment

5.      analyze results

6.      drawn conclusion

UNIT 1 - ECOSYSTEMS

Experimentation

Final Scientific Study Report Due Dates: PD 2 & 4 = Friday 9/25; PD 3 & 7 = Tuesday 9/29.

Bring Books Tuesday 9/29 and Wednesday

HW: Select a question and create a hypothesis for a cause and effect experiment you conduct and simply explain variables and control group.

For PD 2, 3 & 7 due Tuesday 9/15

Example

Observation = Guys seem to high-five more than girls.

Question = I wonder if, when I put up my hand to high-five, a higher percentage of guys than girls will high-five back.

Hypothesis = When I put up my hand to high-five, a higher percentage of guys than girls will high five back.

Control group will be high-five response rate from those I approach without holding my hand up to high-five.

Independent variables: testers hand raising, facial expression, no words spoken, made eye contact.

Dependent variable: Each study participant "Did" or "Did Not" respond by hitting testers hand with a high-five. What percent responded with a high-five?

Homework: Outline p.86-93 following format from blue packet from first day of class.

P2, 3, & 7: Homework due, and test on: Thrs 9/11

P4: Homework due, and test on: Fri. 9/12

ENERGY TRANSFER & CYCLING OF MATTER

Properties of Living Things:

1. Made of CELLS

2. HOMEOSTASIS maintain stable internal conditions as surroundings change (ex. sweat to cool)

3. METABOLISM carry out chemical reactions to obtain and use energy (plants use energy from sun to make sugars to break down, animals break down food nutrients) to grow, move, process info, etc.

4. RESPOND to changes in surroundings (find shelter from lightning, migrate south when temperatures decrease, pupils dilate in darkness)

5. REPRODUCE

6. HEREDITY - Pass on DNA as genetic information to offspring.

7. GROW at some point in life
