  • A Habit of Mind is knowing how to behave intelligently when you DON'T know the answer.
  • A Habit of Mind means having a disposition toward behaving intelligently when confronted with problems, the answers to which are not immediately known: dichotomies, dilemmas, enigmas and uncertainties.
  • Our focus is on performance under challenging conditions that demand strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance, creativity, and craftsmanship. The critical attribute of intelligent human beings is not only having information, but also knowing how to act on it.
  • Employing Habits of Mind requires drawing forth certain patterns of intellectual behavior that produce powerful results. They are a composite of many skills, attitudes and proclivities including:
    • Value:  Choosing to employ a pattern of intellectual behaviors rather than other, less productive patterns.
    • Inclination:  Feeling the tendency toward employing a pattern of intellectual behaviors.
    • Sensitivity:  Perceiving opportunities for, and appropriateness of employing the pattern of behavior.
    • Capability:  Possessing the basic skills and capacities to carry through with the behaviors.
    • Commitment:  Constantly striving to reflect on and improve performance of the pattern of intellectual behavior.

The 16 Habits of Mind identified by Costa and Kallick include:

  • Persisting
  • Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision
  • Managing impulsivity
  • Gathering data through all senses
  • Listening with understanding and empathy
  • Creating, imagining, innovating
  • Thinking flexibly
  • Responding with wonderment and awe
  • Thinking about thinking (metacognition)
  • Taking responsible risks
  • Striving for accuracy
  • Finding humor
  • Questioning and posing problems
  • Thinking interdependently
  • Applying past knowledge to new situations
  • Remaining open to continuous learning

GUIDELINES FOR P.A.S.S. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND WELLNESS/ HEALTH / DRIVER ED /FAMILY LIVING CLASS

2008-09

MR NARDO

1.       UNDERSTAND THAT PHYSCIAL EDUCATION, HEALTH, DRIVER ED., FAMILY LIVING ARE ALL REQUIREMENTS AND MUST BE PASSED FOR THE YEAR.  THIS CLASS IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS ANY OF YOUR OTHER CORE CLASSES AND IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION.  IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO DO AS WELL AS POSSIBLE ALL 4 YEARS.

2.       LATENESS TO CLASS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.  3 LATES IN ONE MARKING PERIOD WILL COUNT AS AN F ON A TEST GRADE AND WILL BE AVERAGED IN WITH OTHER CLASSWORK.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE ON TIME TO CLASS AND READY TO WORK .  YOUR ABSENCES IN PHYS ED / DRIVERS ED / HEALTH / FAMILY LIVING ALL COUNT FOR THE SAME CLASS… YOU  MUST ADHERE TO THE SCHOOLS POLICY ON ATTENDANCE AND LATENESS.

3.       HEALTH, FAMILY LIVING, AND DRIVERS ED WILL MEET DURING THE CORRESPONDING PHYSICAL EDUCATION BLOCK PERIOD EVERY TIME THERE IS A DAY THREE.  WE WILL MEET IN CLASSROOM 205 AND YOU MUST COME PREPARED WITH NOTEBOOKS AND PEN AND PENCILS ETC. (READY TO WORK) EVERY TIME WE MEET.  FAILURE TO SHOW ON TIME AND UNPREPARED WILL AFFECT YOUR GRADE ADVERSLY AS WELL AS YOUR BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION CHARTS.  THIS CLASS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION AND WILL ONLY MEET ON DAY ONE DURING YOUR PHYS ED BLOCK PERIOD.  THE SAME ABSENCE AND LATENESS POLICY APPLIES.

4.       YOU WILL BE ALLOWED 5 MINUTES BEFORE AND AFTER GYM TO CHANGE.  ATTENDENCE WILL BE TAKEN AT THAT TIME AND IF YOU ARE NOT THERE DURING ATTENDANCE THEN YOU ARE LATE.  CHANGING FOR GYM CLASS IS NOT A REQUIREMENT HOWEVER IT IS RECOMMENDED.  IF YOU ARE NOT CHANGING FOR GYM YOU MUST AT LEAST HAVE PROPER FOOTWEAR (SNEAKERS OR SOFT SOLE SHOES) AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHES.  FAILURE TO PARTICIPATE WILL COUNT AS A ZERO AND 3 ZEROS WILL COUNT AS AN F TEST GRADE FOR THE MARKING PERIOD AND COULD RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE CLASS.  YOU CAN MAKE UP CLASS TIME TO ERASE ZEROS IF NEEDED.   WE WILL DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT A FAILURE DOES NOT HAPPEN.

5.       YOU MUST PARTICIPATE EVERY CLASS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A GRADE.  IF YOU ARE SICK OR INJURED WE MUST HAVE A NOTE FROM A DOCTOR STATING THAT YOU NEED TO MISS AND YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO DO ONE RESEARCH PAPER PER CLASS MISSED.  FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN A ZERO AND THE ABOVE RULE APPLIES.  YOU WILL BE GRADED ON PARTICIPATION, TEAMWORK, ATTITUDE, BEHAVIOR AND WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN, AS WELL AS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF CERTAIN SKILLS AND PATTERNS OF NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS BEHAVIORS AND ATTITUDES.

6.       WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD GREAT GYM CLASSES THAT EVERYONE CAN ENJOY AND PARTICIPATE IN….EVEN STUDENTS WHO HAVE NEVER LIKED OR PARTICIPATED IN GYM IN THE PAST HAVE FOUND IT TO BE ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE CLASSES AND EXPERIENCES IN HIGH SCHOOL. MY GOAL IS TO HELP YOU BECOME HEALTHIER, WELL ROUNDED STUDENTS AND TO GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO LET LOOSE AND HAVE SOME FUN DURING YOUR BUSY DAY.  THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE FUN AND BLOW OFF SOME STEAM.  PLEASE SEE TO IT THAT YOU DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL….ITS UP TO YOU WHAT YOUR GRADE WILL BE AND HOW WELL YOU WILL DO IN THIS CLASS.  REMEMBER YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS…TOGETHER LETS MAKE IT A GREAT YEAR!

I AM AVAILABLE AFTER SCHOOL EVERY DAY FOR EXTRA HELP OR JUST TO TALK FROM  2:30 - 3:01  PLEASE STOP BY !!!
