TO:  All 2012-13 Band Students and Parents

FROM:  Mark J. Donellan, Director of Bands

RE:  Band Rehearsals and Performances

As we start to prepare for the 2012-13 school year, it is important that all band members receive rehearsal and performance schedules so that they can plan accordingly.  All students are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances, including BAND CAMP.  Every student and parent is expected to make this commitment so that the level of excellence in the Paramus High School Band can remain high.  Dates for Band Camp and all Football Games are attached.  Please plan your schedules accordingly.

All students are expected to attend ALL summer music and marching rehearsals (Band Camp), as this is when the halftime show for the upcoming marching season will be taught.

Halftime music will be available for students once they arrive for band camp music rehearsals in August.  Due to the fact that students will not receive music until this time, it is of the utmost importance that all students attend band camp music rehearsals, after-school marching rehearsals, and instrumental sectional rehearsals.  This season’s halftime show will be “The Boys from Jersey,” featuring songs from famous New Jersey musicians, including Frankie Valli, Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi, and Bruce Springsteen.

Dates for Band Camp are Tuesday through Thursday August 21, 22 and 23, from 2pm until 8pm.  From 2pm until 4pm, all Freshman and new marchers will be learning the basics of marching.  There will then be an hour break for dinner, where all students must provide their own meals.  From 5pm to 8pm, all students will attend music rehearsals.  These music rehearsals will take place in the high school band room.  Percussionists, please see attached schedule for your rehearsals.  The following week, the dates for Band Camp are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday August 27, 28, 29, and 30, from 2pm to 9pm.  There will be a one-hour break for dinner these nights from 4:00pm to 5:00pm (all students must provide their own dinner).  All after-school rehearsals in September will be on Mondays and Thursday, from 5:00pm until 9:00pm, as well as rehearsals prior to football games on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. On Thursdays right after school, there will be instrumental music sectionals.  Please see the attached schedule for sections.  Starting on October 15, marching rehearsals will be once a week during the school week on Mondays, from 5:00pm until 9:00pm, as well as prior to football games on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.  Keep in mind, once the halftime show is perfected, the number and the length of rehearsals will be cut back.

I am looking forward to a very exciting school year.  Last year’s marching band season was a very successful one, and I plan to keep the standard of excellence in the Paramus Music Department at a high level, something that cannot be achieved without the commitment and dedication of both students and parents.

Feel free to contact me this summer at Mdonellan@paramus.k12.nj.us or 261-7800, Ext. 3052.  Email is the best form of communication during the summer months.

Performance Ensembles for Band Students at Paramus High School

The Wind Ensemble is the premiere performing band of the Paramus School District.  Students are only selected to play in the Wind Ensemble through auditions, and any students 9th through 12th grade are eligible to audition

The Wind Ensemble performs advanced music often performed only on a college level.  In May of 2006, the Wind Ensemble competed at Hershey Park, scoring a 98.5 out of a possible 100, placing 1st in its division as well as 1st in overall band.  The Wind Ensemble followed up this fantastic win in 2008 by winning all divisions of the Music in the Parks competition in Williamsburg Virginia.  They won best overall band, best concert band, and won their division as well.  A high standard of excellence in rehearsals, performance as well as competition has made this elite group into what it is today.

Concert Band is the non-auditioned band at Paramus High School.  Any student who signs up for band is accepted in the Concert Band.  The Concert Band regularly seats over 120 student musicians, and performs difficult music at several concerts throughout the year.

In May of 2006, the Concert Band competed at Hershey Park, scoring a 97.5 out of a possible 100, placing 1st in its division as well as 2nd in overall band (placing 2nd only to the Wind Ensemble).  In 2008 at the Williamsburg Virginia-Music in the Parks competition, the Concert Band once again gained a superior rating, winning its division, and placing 3rd overall.  In 2009, the concert band swept all of the awards on our trip to Washington D.C., winning its division, best overall band, and winning the adjudicators award, which goes to the highest scoring performing ensemble of the competition throughout all the band, orchestra, and choir divisions.

All students enrolled in the Concert Band at Paramus High School are also members of The Paramus High School Spartan Marching Band.

The Paramus High School Spartan Marching Band has become a fan favorite at town parades, but more importantly as the top halftime attraction at the Varsity football games.  The Spartan Marching Band has over 120 marching members, as well as 18 color guard members.  Known as "The Pride of Paramus," the Spartan Marching Band entertains the crowds with stand music, as well as with high-energy themed halftime shows.  Past themes have included “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Weber,” “The Beatles,” and “West Side Story.”  Often scoring high in local competitions, the Spartan Marching Band has gained a reputation as one of the most entertaining marching bands in North Jersey.  At the 2008 Music in the Parks Marching Competition at Midland Park High School, the marching band won best overall band, best band in our division, best overall marching, best percussion in our division, and best overall music.  We rock!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps the greatest attribute of all bands at Paramus High School is the outstanding student leadership displayed throughout all the ensembles.  Frequently having the highest number of students accepted into the Bergen County High School Band is a sign of great talent, musicianship, as well as dedication to practice.  Rarely do you find a high school music department achieve a talent level of having one student accepted into the All State Band.  In 2008, Paramus High School had 5 students accepted into the All State Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensemble.  But the greatest testament to student leadership comes from the drum majors, sections leaders and field captains, as well as elected officers who make all the bands at Paramus High School a well oiled machine, as well as a musical family that everyone loves to make music with.

What ensembles can I play in at Paramus High School if I am in the Concert Band?

1.    Concert Band-   So, you signed up for concert band.  What does this mean?  Well, it means that you have opened yourself up to many other musical opportunities at the High School.  This year, concert band had 124 students, and has performed several public concerts. In 2006 concert band performed a competition in Hershey Park, PA (where we won first place over several other bands!!!).  In 2007, we performed live at Disney World in Orlando Fl.  In 2008, the concert band won a Superior rating on our trip to Williamsburg, Virginia, and in 2009 the concert band swept all the awards on our Washington D.C. trip, getting the highest score out of any performing group of the weekend!

2.    Marching Band-   Congratulations, by joining the concert band, you have also agreed to be a member of the Paramus High School Spartan Marching Band.  Relax, it is not as bad as it seems.  Last year, the marching band performed at all the football games, constantly playing music in the stands for the fans and the cheerleaders, and performing our halftime show on the field.  Our biggest event for marching band is the North Jersey Marching Band Festival, as well as the Bergenfield and Midland Park marching competitions, where last year Paramus was one of the most highly praised bands of the evening.  In 2008, the marching band won our division, as well as best overall band at the Music in the Parks Marching Band Competition at Midland Park High School.

3.    Wind Ensemble-   In September, you will be asked to play a seating audition, which will decided where you sit in concert band.  The top chairs in each section will be asked to play in the Wind Ensemble, a group of about 50 musicians that meet after school, and who perform extremely challenging music, including movie soundtracks as well as full symphonic works.  Students in grades 10 through 12 receive honors credit in band for performing with the Wind Ensemble.  The high school Honors Wind Ensemble is a very competitive group of advanced players who take making music very seriously, and the music performed is at the highest level of high school musicianship.  Our competitive record, which is listed above, is a wonderful testament to the talent of this group.

4.    Orchestra-   The orchestra at Paramus High School has about 85 amazing string players, and each year the very top students in the band are asked to be members of the wind, brass, and percussion sections of the orchestra.  It is an honor to be chosen to play in the orchestra, and to be including among the musicians who can handle this challenging type of music.  Mrs. Wilkes directs the high school orchestra, and it has become one of the best orchestra programs in the state of New Jersey!

5.    Pit Orchestra-   Every year, the top string players, along with the top wind, brass, and percussion players, are invited to play in the pit orchestra during the musical.  This group meets after school, and accompanies the actors, singers, and dancers during the yearly musical.  In 2003, 2004, and 2006, the pit orchestra was nominated by the Paper Mill Playhouse as one of the best student pit orchestras in the state of New Jersey.

6. Small Ensembles-   Every year, more small ensembles are forming, rehearsing and performing at Paramus High School.  As an example, at past spring select ensembles concerts, a saxophone quartet, two flute quartets, a flute choir with 20 students, a small percussion ensemble, and a small clarinet choir all performed along with the wind ensemble.

7.    Jazz Band-   Jazz Band is a select group of some of the best musicians at the high school.  It includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, vocalists, percussion, and guitar and bass guitar.  All sections are auditioned.  The jazz band performs a variety of music, including jazz standards, rock, funk, and swing.  This year, the jazz band performed a holiday concert at the Barnes and Noble on Route 17 South in Paramus.
